Located in the south-western Pacific Ocean, it is one of the most diverse countries on earth, with over 850 indigenous languages, and at least as many traditional societies. This is all with a population of only 6 million. Only 18% of its inhabitants live in urban centres. It is also one of the world’s least explored countries, culturally and geographically, with many undiscovered species of plants and animals thought to be here.
Mountains run through the country, forming the populated highlands region. Nearly 85% of the country is carpeted by tropical rainforests and there are a number of volcano’s, where eruptions are frequent. It is one of the few countries on the equator which experiences snowfall in its most elevated parts. The climate is tropical, being just south of the equator.
Agriculture represents 30% of the country’s GDP and supports 85% of the population. Cash crops, ranked by value, are coffee, oil, cocoa, copra, tea, rubber and sugar.
