Ethiopia Kontir Rainforest
After a long and fruitful search we are now finally in a position to offer you a marvellous wild coffee, the origins of which there can be no doubt. The BIO certificate is a stamp of pure originality and authenticity. This wild coffee grows in the protected Rain forests of Kontir (in the province of Sheko with the capital Mezan Teferi in south west Ethiopia). It has the qualities of power and taste, which provide a wonderful espresso. An espresso with its roots in the rain forests, possessing all the power of nature, which is exhibited in it’s wonderful taste and smell.
Ethiopia Kontir has a very distinct aroma, full body and sweet fruity tones with hints of berries.
Kontir Forest – Biodiversity Reserve
The Kontir-Berhan rain forest is situated in South-West Ethiopia, close to Mezan Teferi. It is a primary coffee forest, with a thick undergrowth of wild coffee bushes. As of today it still encompasses some 10.000 ha. Kontir-Berhan is one of three officially recognised biodiversity reserves for arabica coffee – with Yayu und Harenna forests. In any other country, Caffea Arabica is but a foreign species, directly or indirectly imported from Ethiopia. It is only here that Caffea Arabica can be found in its natural genetic diversity.
The Ethiopian government has designated Kontir-Berhan as a special biodiversity reserve. The preservation project has identified a core zone which is to be kept free from human interference. Our Kontir coffee is collected in the intermediate zone. There, extensive cultivation is allowed, but neither the introduction of seedlings from outside nor the slashing of trees.
Kontir coffee is produced – and ‘washed’ – by the Gizmereth Forest Coffee Producers’ Cooperative. Its coffee is certified by Utz Kapeh and is also certified organic (EU, JAS, NOP).
