Papua New Guinea Sigri Estate

Papua New Guinea Sigri Estate

Sigri plantation, located in the Waghi Valley in the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, was established in the 1950’s and rapidly gained the reputation for producing the finest shade grown Arabic coffee in the country. The coffee cherries are hand-picked and pulped on the same day of picking.

The fermentation process follows with a period of three days broken every 24 hours by washing. However, unlike most other coffees, the Sigri process follows this by total immersion in water for a further day making this coffee very clean. Sun drying further enhances the coffee and, unlike many others, all Sigri coffees are sun dried.

The estate is almost 1550 masl where the plantation enjoys a cool climate with a bountiful rainfall. All plantings are exclusively Arabica, concentrating on the Arusha and Typica varieties, which produce a finer coffee than other Arabicas in Papua New Guinea.

The Sigri estate has been internationally recognized as producing some very fine quality coffees.
For us at LBC, Papua New Guinean coffees are an acquired taste; they generally have a slight pungent aroma and taste and generally do not fall in the realm of some of our other cleaner coffees offered from Indonesia but they are heavy bodied with a lot of earth tones like cedar, pepper and allspice. This coffee has a long sweet finish and a nice balanced acidity and buttery mouth feel.

For those of you who like the taste profile of most Indonesian coffees, you will love the Sigri Estate!
